I got The Complete Triathlon Book for Christmas. It does not specifically address my needs as an off-road athlete, but if you are a roadie, I would suggest giving it a read. I found it helpful.

Since I committed to doing a triathalon in the Fall, I am going to start trying to figure a more structured training program. Since I'm also trying to train for a century in May, I might hold off a bit on swimming so I can concentrate on cycling. The tri is a sprint so I know the distances are short.
I looked at Amazon and there are quite a few books on training that have pretty good reviews. I've also looked at websites that have training info.
Has anyone purchased books? If so, are there any recommendations?

I have some books that I've read and would gladly send along if you would like to read them. They have some good programs in them. If you send me a PM with your address I'd be glad to pass them along.

thanksDenise, a PM is on its way.
I'll also check out the Complete Triathalon Book. I am a roadie so maybe it'll help.
I'm still ever-so-confused as to how to balance all the different types of training required. You all amaze me!
Teigyr - for your first triathlon, I would try to use a free program off a website. I think beginner tiathelete has some:

maybe trifuel as well:

As for books, my favorite is "The Triathlete's Training Bible" by Joe Friel. This is very detailed and goes through a lot of physiology etc. I do think it's a good read for a beginner, but just read the first few chapters in order to understand the theory on how a plan is laid out and how to make a triathlon plan fit into your life. The chapters on how to design a program would be way over the top for a beginner.
Have fun training and keep posting questions when you have them.
