Today is the one year anniversary of my first bike ride. Back then, I had absolutely NO idea what I was embarking upon. I decided I needed to do more cardio and my gym membership had run out so I lugged my heavy old mountain bike into the van and drove to school. After school, I got on my bike and rode a 10 km flat loop. I had to stop half way because I was so out of breath. I managed to get back to the school after almost dying up a 1% grade (if it's even that...). All in all, it took me 30 minutes and despite my exhaustion, I felt proud of myself and was determined to get better.
Fast forward one year - two new bikes (1 mountain and one road), and 2800 km later. Today after work, I got on my road bike and rode the same route I did one year ago today. I went as fast as I could and was even lucky enough that I didn't have to stop completely at the 3 lights along the route. I realize it's not a fair to compare a mountain bike to a road bike but it is fun to see how far I've come in one year. If only I could see that much growth in the next year.
Last year: 10 km - 30:00 minutes - 20 km/h
This year: 10 km - 20:34 minute - 29.4 km/h
I've lost about 20 lbs during that year and have become stronger, more fit, and finally able to climbs the real hills now. I can't wait to see what the next year holds!
Whoo baby!! I love biking!!![]()

PS I didn't have to stop for a breath half way and I barely noticed that darn 1% grade near the end today.![]()

Congrats on your anniversary. I love your story and feel the same way about my upcoming bike anniversary. I can't believe how far I've come and how much joy it's brought it into my life.
I hope you have many happy and safe kilometers ahead of you!
Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Continue to learn. Appreciate your friends. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is.

Happy Anniversary! Congratulations on how far you've come.
I just realized last night that Sunday is my first road bike's "birthday". Well, it was built on March 31st, but I bought in April 1st (no fooling!). We are celebrating 1 year together with a 50 mile ride.
The best part about going up hills is riding back down!
Awesome! What a different a year makes.
I love looking back and seeing how far I've come.

"Keep plugging along. The finish line is getting closer with every step. When you see it, you won't remember that you are hurting, that anything has gone wrong, or just how slow or fast you are.
You will just know that you are going to finish and that was what you set out to do."

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.
Congratulations KG. I love it. I'm so happy for you. You've discovered biking and you love it. You lost weight and you're healthier. And now you'll have something you will be able to do together with DH until you're both really old.
