Illinois to Wisconsin

My friend and I started cycling a few months ago, we are both 48...now we want to bike from the NW suburbs of Chicago to SE Wisconsin, near Waukesha....How do we go about finding safe road routes? Has anyone done a similar route? Any help would be appreciated....Keep pedaling!

I made up my own trip in N.C. a few years ago and the Dept of Transportation sent me bike maps for the entire state. It is worth a try.

Also check with Local Bike clubs including tandem clubs. They do a lot of rides around there.

Aventure cycling has maps for sale but I am not sure of the details.
