multiple bike storage!

we finally decided how to go about storing our bikes! some of you may remember i was asking for ideas, suggestions, opinions.. how you all store yours!

well we decided on the leonardo bike holders http://www.performancebike.com/shop/....cfm?sku=17340... seven of them lined up on one wall of the garage! since we were trying to best utilize space.. we didn't want to just hit studs for each rack... so hubby bought a board and attached that to the studs... then measured and attached the leonardo's.... we put closet mirrors between each bike (for checking position when doing weight workouts)

getting the expanse of wall space meant getting rid of two more shelves.... i work out in the garage... so we also had to keep that in mind... we used to have 2 old dressers across another wall of the garage for storing stuff and holding the tv and dvd player, etc.... well.. we moved two shelves over.. one for fitness stuff and the other for more cycling stuff... got ride of the old cycling stuff storage shelf and replaced it with the white closet maid stacking thingies http://www.closetmaid.com/Look/Produ...em_number=8501 so we have cubbies instead of messy shelves for gloves, helmets, shoes, etc..... (plus the other shelf for tubes, trainers, misc bike stuff) got a wall mount for the tv and dvd (like what they use in hospitals)...

we've now covered the whole floor with puzzle mat instead of just 75% of it!

it's surprising how much more room we have with the bikes up off the floor

now we just have to clean off the remaining wall of shelves (as hubby likes to ask: "if you haven't used it for 10 years... do you REALLY think you need it?" uh... YES! lol! ok.. not really... i'm going to declutter! i promise!)

now if it just wasn't so cold out there at 4:30 in the morning when i'm working out!

I think I'll do this for the bikes too. Right now, we have individual little racks with shelves that hold a bike, but that limits the garage wall to four b/c of a large window. If we do like you, I can get more bikes. hmmm..... Better not tell hubby that part.

Really efficient way of storing bikes Cali, but I am wondering about the pressure on the wheels... how are they attached to the wall? Do the wheels have much weight/pressure on them?

Just thinking, wheels are made to have pressure on the rim/spokes from the road up and the rider down... if your bikes are hooked up by wheels wouldn't that put "un-natural" stresses on them? I think your mtbike wheels would be robust enough... but I wouldn't put my $1000 ksyriums anywhere near that if any weight went on the wheels...

Any chance of a close up shot of how they are locked onto the wall? Cheers.

We moved from a small (small by UK standards, so miniscule by US standards) house with a very large and long double garage attached to it, to a larger house but with a smaller and shorter (i.e. standard uk sized) double garage. We can barely get all of our required stuff in - 10 bikes (including a tandem), the SO's motorbike, the SO's friend's kit car and all the other garage paraphernalia. We have hung four of our bikes on the wall supported by the frame, like a car bike rack, the expensive bikes are all locked together tidily and to the wall only the commuters are "loose". I could barely swing our cat in our garage with all our stuff in it, never mind do a workout. Once again wow!

it's just a double! we don't park our car, truck or motorcycle inside! they stay out in the driveway!

if we didn't have the smith machine (not shown in the pics... except for barely seeing it in the mirror... we could pull both in, if needed (well.. probably one now with the bikes hanging like that! cuz they do stick out a bit!) but we decided a while ago.. when i outgrew being able to workout in the living room with all my paraphanalia... that the garage could be a fitness.. then bike area! the opposite wall from the bikes still has metal shelves with.. uhm.. stuff.. ya.. stuff! not junk! lol! on them! he keeps trying to get me to go through it and through a lot of it away!

what we need is a basement! but i don't know of anyone in california that has one! (or a bigger house with a dedicated workout room!!!!!)

i can try to take a picture of them close up this weekend... (i'm at work now) but i don't think there's too much unnatural pressure.. heck.. people hang them upside down from ceilings! that puts the whole load of the bike on the wheel (not that either of the two carbon bikes weigh that much) i think there is probably less pressure on the wheels the way they are hanging than if they were sitting on the floor leaning on something...

i know when i was asking different forums (including this one) about ways to store... it seemed that these style of hangers were very popular with people....
