    Turkeys

We had a flock of turkeys wandering the streets earlier in the spring. I guess a pair decided to stay and nest in the open space behind our yard. Cassie Cat alerted me to the presence of these two on our fence this morning.

Wow. Turkeys are so shy where I am, we hear them much more often than we see them. If we carefully and slowly peek our eyes up over the windowsill when we hear gobbling, sometimes we'll be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of them at the edge of the woods, maybe 100 feet from the house. Usually the movement in the window is enough to alert them and send them vanishing into the woods.

Shots were taken through the French door, with the turkeys about 30 - 40 feet away. The sun was reflecting off the glass so they probably couldn't see us.

There was a second adult and a second baby, but we couldn't get all 4 to cooperate.

    LOVE the chick.

We see turkeys every time we come down to the American River Trail. The dogs are just fascinated by them. Us too.

They are getting bigger and there are ten babies!

Parents and babies were in our driveway when Thom came home today. One of our outside feral cats was on a pot shelf watching them all and looking a bit nervous. Those parent turkeys are pretty big.

I had a discussion with a friend during the brevet this weekend. He said he'd been doing roving SAG for the Grizzly Peak century this year and came across a rider who'd hit a turkey while descending and had hideous road rash (the turkey was much worse off). We discussed the fact that 10+ years ago, we didn't notice turkeys in "civilized" parts, but now they're more commonplace, theorizing that killing off coyotes, bobcats, etc., has removed the natural predators.

We got turkeys on our deck and roof a year or so ago:

And if they're anything like parent geese, they can be pretty mean!! Outside feral cat is very wise to keep his distance.
