Is there a checklist a new rider can use to make sure a bike fits properly?

I don't know if there's a checklist as such, but pay attention as you test ride to how you feel. Do you feel stretched out? Cramped? Too much weight on your hands?
At least I don't leave slime trails.

Honestly if you are a new rider, I think you need to have someone help you who has experience riding if you're not going to be fit by a bike shop or other professional.

There is quite a bit of information you can find on several blogs an forums. Bike fit also depends on what type of bike riding you are interested in. A race fit is going to be different than a touring fit which is different than a mt bike fit.
We have a fairly detailed section on our website dedicated to helping people determine the best size for them in a touring bike http://biketouringnews.com
