I don't remember which key used to have the apple on it. Is it the command key or the option key? It's not on the laptop keyboards any more. And it doesn't seem to do anything on mine?
Shift-command-3 definitely doesn't do anything on mine. (OS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard) (And I notice the "official" list of keyboard commands that pll linked to doesn't include a Print Screen command, with these key combinations or any others)
I always just used Grab.

The command key has the apple on it on mine, but it's the key next to the space bar. Option says "option alt" on mine, and sits right next to the command key. I remember the days when they had "open apple" and "closed apple", but they got rid of that some years ago.
I have the same OS on my laptop as you do, Oakleaf, but I am not a hard core Mac user! shift-command-3 produces a camera sound on my laptop and the screenshot file is saved on the desktop. Perhaps the defaults have been changed in yours? You can check them opening System Preferences > Keyboard.
Ah, okay, it is there.
I keep my speakers muted unless I'm specifically listening to something, and I thought if anything had happened it would open either a printer window or an image viewing/editing app that I'd see in the Dock, which it didn't. I see now - it just saves it as a Preview doc. Thanks!
