Well, I don't do the long rides, but IME, once you get over even 30-40 miles, creams with a lot of water in them like Chamois Butt'r are useless. The water dissipates and you're left with a whole lot of residue.
If you haven't tried pure shea butter yet, give it a try. It's not greasy and it doesn't break down - over time, whatever part of it slides away from where you want it, just gets absorbed into your chamois and helps lubricate more out-of-the-way places (or helps condition your leather saddle
). It only takes a little. I only need to re-apply it maybe every 50-60 miles, and I think that's more because it gets wiped off when I pee, than because it wears off. I carry it in a 1/2 oz jar in my jersey pocket.
