    Evil Evil Bike Shop Dude

So I go to my local Specialized dealer today and ask to test ride a Specialized Toupe Saddle on the trainer because I know they are very fussy about returns and I wanted to be safe. So the guy rolls out a Specialized Dolce in my size and lets me toodle around the store with it - I buy the saddle and walk out the door, thinking.. "hmm that sure seemed like a fun little bike. - Eh, but I'm not into Aluminum.." and put it out of my mind.

Fast forward 6 hours or so, I've ridden the Toupe about 10 miles on my 40lb Surly LHT and decide I need to try the 143mm size because the 155 is chafing me. So I schlep back to the Specialized dealer and ask to test ride the 143 saddle..

Dude: "Sure! But didn't you say you didn't like Aluminum.. You need to try the Specialized Ruby Expert! Oh, let me take your ID and credit card so you can take it out on the road, you can't get a good feel for a saddle on a trainer.. there aren't bumps in the road on a trainer!" [Insert evil grin here]

So he rolls out a friggin BEAUTIFUL black/hot pink Specialized Ruby expert in my size(that weighs less that 1 wheel on my LHT), pops the saddle on, and says "Have fun!"

Oh geez, it fits like a glove... after 5 seconds on the bike I know the saddle is going to be the one, but I couldn't stop after just one ride around the block. 8 min later I pry myself off the bike and wheel it in the shop..

Dude: "Did it work for you?"
    Me: "YES!"
Dude: "The saddle or the bike?"
    Me: "YES!"
    Dude: "mwah hahahahahahahahahahahahaha"
    ME: "Ok, how much?"
    Dude: "about $2,000"

Me: "sigh.................................. maybe in a few years......"

Now you can't get the bike out of your mind. I'm surprised he didn't say: "you know, we have interest free financing or layaway if you're interested..."

Ha, that was what happened with my test ride on the Dolce. I said I'd wanted carbon, but they didn't have a Ruby in my size to test. "We can order it for you, and there are options for financing or layaway..."
At least I don't leave slime trails.

Yep, the allure of financing or layaway is how I came to get my lovely Gunnar, and later, my Jamis...

They know their stuff and how to hook bike lovers

The Koolaid has entered my bloodstream ;-)

I fended him off by explaining that we are buying a house and the closing date is in 2 weeks. His grin changed to a mere smile and he said: "Oh, congradulations" [notice the lack of explanation point]

Now I just have to keep reminding MYSELF of that!

That's the way it started for me too... I think the sales guy knew by the unstoppable grin on my face I liked the Ruby.
