    Jobs

OK. Some may know that I've not exactly been "happy" with my job and future advancement/opportunities for some time. Job market is tight, tho the opportunities growing daily, they're still not what they were.

I had a lead on a new job and took several tests and three rounds of interviews only to have things not work out. Got a call from one of the firms I'd been talking to late last year and it appears they want to bring me on full-time and attend a two week technology Bootcamp to get myself fully up to speed on some of the tech and learn some new things. Offer letter yet to come, but I was verbally told they wanted me, and to expect the offer letter. Could be a 5-10k bump in pay, but I don't know what kind of yearly bump I might get with current gig, so that gap could close a little. I'm hoping for the higher as that would make the potential travel more.. palatable.

This new position could very well require more travel as I'd be working as a consultant and even tho I'd be a full-time employee, they would place me where they have clients.

Benefits with new company would be much better.

Education opportunities with new company would be much better. --> they are willing to bring me in and give me two weeks training right off the bat to make me more marketable.

Current company, may not be the best position, but at least I know where I am daily and have some flexibility with work schedule and generous paid time off (four weeks)

There are some people here I actually like working with, but I feel I'm not moving forward - have been promised things in the past, but with changes in management, those promises died when those managers left the company.

OK. That is my tale for today.. We'll see what the offer letter says when I receive it.

You might be able to negotiate time off to equal your current position. That's something that is very important to me; I would not go from 4 weeks off to 2 weeks off. No way!

Flexible work schedule is also extremely important to me, but it might be something that you can give up for the other plusses--that is up to you.

Seriously consider the travel part. How long would they put you with clients? How far away?

Since this is a bicycling forum (at least officially), you might want to consider the bicycle-commute friendliness also. That would be huge with me, but it may or may not be an issue for you.

You might want to consider making a simple list of pros and cons. Sounds like a silly exercise, but I've found it very useful for all sorts of situations.

See what the offer letter says and treat it as a starting point.

    Best wishes to you!

I gave my letter of resignation today and accepted the new position. It's a really scary place to be... not knowing what the future holds... but am glad I made the decision.

It feels rather good to know I'm moving forward instead of dreading each day like there was this weight tying me down. Liberating really.

    Thanks for letting me vent.

That sounds pretty exciting for you!
Each day is a gift, that's why it is called the present.
