Getting Chased by Dogs

Ok, so I remember reading about this a long time ago, but for the life of me can't find it.

I have moved to an area that has a TON of loose dogs...farm country...and whereas getting off, putting the bike between me and dog and screaming my head off does stop the dog, it's quite annoying to have to get to that. Allowing the dog to get close enough for me to kick him doesn't quite appeal to me, and I'd rather have something that keeps the dog a good 4-5 ft away from me. Anyone have something that works? Do dog whistles have the right effect? I love dogs, so I'd hate to really hurt a pooch

I find that a stern "Back!" or "Go home!" often does the trick. For it to work though, you have to see them first, which is sometimes the challenge. I've started to develop a sixth sense of when I'm in loose dog territory and start scanning the yards before I get to them. I'm not above letting my DH ride a bit in front. He's not quite as terrified of them as me. So, he flushes them out and I yell. Beyond that, we've scoped out a handful of safe routes.

As I've said before, a command that I'm not emotionally invested in works a lot better at keeping any anxiety out of my voice. My go-to phrase is "Get a job!" Someone else here tells loose dogs to "Get off the couch!"

I seem to be search engine retarded

I was recently chased by a lab that I knew was going to chase (he actually chased a car down the road when I was heading one way, and I had no option but to go back the same way) so I slowed down, got off my bike, and yelled at him when he charged. He barked until his stupid owner called him, then came charging back as soon as I jumped on my bike again. And the owner did NOTHING

Any suggestions on a situation like that? The dog seemed super territorial about his street...er...tiny county road, and the usual yelling didn't do much good other than stopping the chase whilst I wasn't moving.
