If you're gonna run a stop sign, at least look...

to make sure you're not cutting off another cyclist!!!!

Well this was a first for me today. I was flying down a straight road at about 28 mph and two cyclists came shooting out from a side street literally right in front of me! They were turning right, but they came way out into the lane...right into my path!

Now I don't mind at all that they ran the stop sign, but they didn't even look. There were trees and bushes obscuring my view of the side street, so I didn't see them until they flew out in front of me. Maybe they didn't hear any cars so they figured they were ok and didn't bother to look to the left, but oh my heavens, they certainly got my adrenaline pumping! Luckily there were no cars around because I had to swerve way out into the road to avoid them.

At any rate, it was a good reminder that you need to look for more than just cars if you're gonna fly through a stop sign.

Actually it's a good reminder to not fly through stop signs. That kind of riding reflects poorly on all cyclists. I hope you gave them an earful. Glad you're okay.

You'll want to look for police cars in the intersection, too.

Although if we want to give Ms. Smith the benefit of the doubt, she probably has not been able to give her side of the story...

I know, I hate it when I see other cyclists do things that give all of us a bad name. I would imagine these two probably felt a bit sheepish after they realized what happened. I didn't yell at them or anything...I figured they knew what they did and that would be enough. I've done some really stupid things myself and I always feel like such an idiot afterwards, so I was just hoping that's kinda how they felt!

Don't count on it. I know plenty of people who are utterly unapologetic when they ignore stop signs or red lights and remain alive and uninjured only because oncoming traffic was able to stop in time to avoid an accident. Just this morning one of them gave me the finger.

Today DH and I were riding our bikes through a green light and 2 pedestrians came right out in the cross walk...didn't even look in our direction. They obviously did not have clear crossing signal. I wonder what their response would have been if my 250# brute of a hubby had actually hit one of them.
