Owners of Specialized Sirrus or Trek 7.3FX

Anyone out there own a Specialized Sirrus or Trek 7.3FX WSD?

My SIL wants to get into riding (mainly bike paths but maybe a little road) and these bikes came up in discussion. She is not really into checking out heaps of bikes so if I can come up with a short list of bikes she should take a look at it would really help.

I love the heck out of my Sirrus. It's comfortable, relatively light, skinny but not too skinny tires, shifts easily. I've got mine set up as a daily commuter, and it's just about perfect. I ride mostly on city streets and a little on bike paths; my only caution is that the stock seats that come on them are AWFUL. Get a different saddle and enjoy!

I love my 7.3fx. I did have to change the seat though. It is tough enough to take on the most gnarly roads and maybe even a dirt road or two. I did recently upgrade to a 7.7fx, because I wanted something a little lighter with some added comfort features. The 7.6 also has some comfort features, but I wanted tougher wheels.

I have the Trek 7.2 fx , it's my second one (the previous one was hit by a car and the frame became untrue - I was on the bike when it was hit but there were no injuries to me). I highly recommend the 7._ fx line to any beginner. They're sturdy bikes with very reasonable components considering the price.

I also have a fast road bike but I just went for a 50 km ride on the fx. I call it my "truck". I use it for commuting, and whenever I need to carry stuff (panniers). Works great on pretty much any surface, including gravel and dirt trails.

Two additions to my previous posts:

1) I was surprised to find the Bontrager saddle that came with the 7.2 just fine. It's still on.

2) I have seen many people with the Sirrus and it seems to me like it's pretty much the "same bike" as the 7.2/3 fx. Also looks like a great bike. My testimony in favour of the Trek does not mean anything about the Specialized.

I have a Sirrus, but it is a 1987 roadie. Probably not what you're looking for.

I have a 2010 Specialized Vita Comp which is the female version of the Sirrus. Have you considered a Vita? I love mine, it's fast, it's comfortable to ride (with the Zertz inserts and the carbon fork and seatstay to soften the road buzz).

i've just been wanting to say this. . .after 25 years of being a devoted mtn bike rider--last one a specialized stumpjumper comp fsr--i bought a vita comp and am having way too much fun! i amactually inspired to "train" on hills and am headed for some long distance. this bike is light and agile and stable and altho i changed a few things(i just tend to do that) i am delighted. started out on a bianchi in 1981 and just put the same seat on this bike an ideale 90 leather--life is good.

I own a 2010 7.3FX, just got it two months ago, I really like the bike, BUT I have already out grown it ! I thought when I bought it, I too would ride less than 10 miles at a time, on and off bike paths, just wanted a newer nicer Hybrid to ride with Hubby occasionally...
2 months later I've put over 500 miles on it, and am agonizing about what to do next !
LBS isn't too keen on giving me full trade on it since Ive put so many miles on it already, so my choice is to modify the handle bars, see how I like that, go ahead and take what ever the LBS will give me towards a trek 2.1, or try to sell it out right and keep trying to ride as many bikes as possible ...
Any way 7.3FX is a really nice bike- the Bontrager saddles are HORRIFIC !, but everything is great- just be very, very sure this style bike is absolutely what you're looking for- I thought I did...evidently lots of others have been disapointed with thier choice of Flat bar over Curly in the long run ...

I think those who know *exactly* what they need when first starting out are in the minority. Originally I thought a comfort bike would be ideal for me, but didn't anticipate getting into riding again as much I did. I'd forgotten how much I'd enjoyed cycling in the past.

Within a few months I was buying a road bike-then a year later a Jamis Coda Sport... (The comfort bike was then sold to a co-worker, but I was grateful for the part it played in the cycling "evolution".) Next thing I knew, a touring bike was following me home. DBF has asked which one I will be selling, but I enjoy riding them all for different reasons.

You shouldn't have trouble selling the 7.3 FX privately if you decide to get a road bike. They are very popular and versatile. Or-you may want to keep it and switch between the two- if that's an option for you.

Then there are those like me who spend large amounts of money to convert from curly bars to flat riser bars

But then again, I am an odd person You don't have to have road bars to put on long distances, but of course the bike has to fit you and you need to be comfortable with it.

My 7.6 is a nice little road bike with flat bars and she does a pretty good job - though that is a little higher up the 7 FX series than you were asking about. (It isn't her fault that The Wanderer (LHT) fits me better - but I will eventually have her re-fit.)
