Bawaaah... off the bike! - Long

Needed to whine a little... I saw a few injury threads and thought that misery loves company. Had a crash about 2 weeks ago and fractured my wrist! DH and I were cruising on our favorite trail. There was a fair amount of bike traffic as well as runners, dog walkers and skaters out. We were riding at about 18 mph and weaving in and out ... yelling "on your left"... about 11 miles in, an inline skater (wearing headset, of course), pulled over the line right in front of us. DH managed to brake enough to get past him without hitting him, but I couldn't quite slow down enough and tapped the back tire of DH's bike. Of course, the rest is history. Went down hard and fast on concrete.

The entire right side of my body was immediately either road rash or giant contusions. But my right hand/wrist was in excruciating pain - I said to DH "uh oh, I think I broke something". Still, we were about 5 miles out to the car, so I got on the bike and rode out -- whining and crying the whole way.

The next day they told me it was fractured and in a place where they had to put pins in to stabilize and a plaster old-timey cast. Tomorrow, I get the cast off and the pins out and they will put on a light weight fiberglass cast, which I will wear for approx. 4 more weeks.

I spent the whole winter on my trainer so that I would be fit for spring, and here I sit. I've tried to get on the trainer, but the arm/hand is too sore... just can't do it yet. I am so bummed out

Oh, I am so sorry...that just really stinks. We have a nice paved trail here, too...but I don't really like biking on it for this reason. There are far too many oblivious and inconsiderate people who frequent the path (and don't clean up after their dogs...grrr...). It also crosses too many roads and all the starting and stopping makes me nuts.

I hope you heal fast. A friend of ours broke her wrist last Summer in a mountain-biking accident. She was back on the bike pretty fast--but she is also kinda insane (she has done century rides on the indoor trainer for "fun").

Oh no, I am so sorry. You should figure out how to jury-rig the cast so you can still ride.

Take care of that healing wrist. Important since how it heals could affect you later on.
    And eat healthily.

Maybe some light jogging instead later on before getting back on bike?

Ouch!!! Do you want to borrow some aerobars I have that you can use to rest on? They're just the cheapy ones from Performance, and I'm not using them at the moment. http://www.performancebike.com/bikes..._1033650_-1___

So sorry to hear about your injury. Hopefully it will feel better without the hardware.
We have a spin bike and my DH was able to use it two weeks after he broke his collar bone and paralyzed his leg from the knee down. Ours was a freeby from a local gym my husband has done several projects for. It is pretty much a first generation, plain-Jane model but it is bullet-proof and he loves it.
A spin bike seems more stable than a bike on a trainer. Do you have access to one?

I'm sorry. I have a plate and screws in my wrist permanently. Listen to the PT and move your fingers and wrist as much as you can.

TCtrek - sorry to hear you've joined the injured reserve group. Waaah is right.
Hope you get to feeling better soon. Guess this means your bike goes back on the trainer?

Aero bars might work, or the wrist brace with the metal plate (I had to wear one after pinching a nerve in my hand). But first, let those broken bones knit.

Good healing vibes and juju coming at you!

Take your time and heal! I crashed almost two years ago, only sprained my left wrist (as far as I know - only had an x-ray, not an MRI), and it still hurts today. I wasn't a good patient and was riding the trainer with my brace on and doing the 100 push-up challenge 2 months later. Gee, I wonder why it may not have healed right

    Feel better!

Thanks, guys... somehow this makes me feel better and at least you all are out there representing!!

I got the big fat plaster cast off today and replaced with a lighter weight fiberglass one. But they left the pins in... really grossed me out to see the pins in the x-ray. Yuck! They asked me to stay off the trainer for a few days, then I will try.

Keep riding and put in a few miles for me!
