Solvang Century (March) & Hotel/Transport Logistics

I just signed up for the half-century option of the Solvang Century. This one: http://www.bikescor.com/solvang/welcome.htm. It looks like a lot of the hotels in Solvang (the ones that aren't ~$300) are already sold out, so I'm considering getting a room around 20 miles away the night before.

I'm suspecting this two-month-ahead sellout is because of the ride's popularity. Should I pony up the extra cash for a closer stay, or at least try harder to find somthing in Solvang? If not, will I be screwed when I try to get into town in the am? The 1/2 starts at 9, so I have a little more leeway.

Anyone who's done this ride before have any insight on this?

    Thanks!

Everything in Solvang and Buellton sells out 10 months in advance, so I'd aim for Lompoc(which is what sound like you're doing.
I didn't have any problems getting there but I did in 2006. It was a fine ride. Execpt for the Sleet. and the Hail. and the Rain. and the snow. (a lot of folks bagged it)

we did the 50 a couple of years ago... we had to park about 6-8 blocks away from the start... you could also just get there early and hang out and people watch

This ride looks awesome!! I am signed up for a tri camp at the end of April in Solvang - I just may have to have a return visit to do this ride!

Yes, I'm pretty excited, and if there is none of the sleet.hail.rain.snow Fredwina mentioned, it should be a great time of year for riding in the hills. Not too hot, not too cold. Fingers crossed.

    Thanks for the help!
