According to this Wikipedia article, the practice of outdoor lighting displays didn't widely begin until the mid 1950's-

"the tradition of decorating evergreen trees with Christmas lights dates back to 1956 when the McAdenville Men's Club conceived of the idea of decorating a few trees around the McAdenville Community Center."[6] However, the The Tree at Rockefeller Center has had "lights" since 1931, but did not have real electric lights until 1956.[7] Furthermore, Philadelphia's Christmas Light Show and Disney's Christmas Tree also began in 1956.[8][9] Though General Electric sponsored community lighting competitions during the 1920s, it would take until the mid 1950s for the use of such lights to be adopted by average households."

I never really gave it much thought. If my mother were still alive I'd ask her what they thought when people started doing that. It must have been a big deal. Remember piling into the car to drive around and look at Christmas lights?

I sure do......we would even drive all the way to St. Louis (which is 1 1/2 hours away) to see the lights and decorations at the shopping centers. There were no malls back then. Am I really that old?

Every year a small group of us get together and decorate our bikes with lights and ride around town and look at all the Christmas lights. This year we rode for an hour and a half (only 11 miles) and leisurely enjoyed all the lights. We got lots of happy holiday honks (and a few unhappy ones) and really enjoyed ourselves. Lots and lots of layers and some hot chocolate in the bottle cages made it fun!

Zen, I remember going downtown to see the department store windows when I was a kid! And I still drive around to look at Christmas lights, though not as faithfully as I did when the kid was small.

I was downtown for the annual Xmas Parade. There were so many Brownies and Cub Scouts I figured anyone who made half an effort to look like they belonged could line up and get in on this.

That article is GREAT! I'm going to save it and use it for tips next year. The bikes in the picture and on Jim in the video look so amazing- they put my little lights to shame. Thanks for sharing that!!!!
