    blasted WASP!

I was leaning down to pick up some planks out of the grass and a wasp must have stung me on teh hand. i didn't see it but it hurt like BLAZES and started swelling almost immediately. So I've had Frankenstein hand all day, it looks like it belongs to another, very fat person, but I've also got this rash all over the place. Ears, eyes, shoulders, all down my sides, small of my back, insides of my arms wrist to armpit, red, bumpy and it itches like hell.

So am I allergic or was this just one humdinger of a nasty wasp? This had better let up before I got to bed or I won't be getting any sleep tonight

yikes - take some benedryl and if you get any facial swelling or any trouble at all breathing get to an ER! In fact... you may want to talk to your doc in any case as the next time you are stung you might have a worse reaction? Better safe than sorry with anaphylactic reactions!

Any chance it's a spider bite? Is there a dark center to the area that was affected?

I just killed a black widow on the deck. I don't know if you have any poisonous spiders there but I thought I'd put it out there as food for thought.

thanks, ladies. The swelling is down a bit but is still there, I'm surprised it's taking so long I don't have any other known allergies but my mother is allergic to wasps and bees so I suspected I might over-react a bit. I'm home alone tonight but haven't felt unwell/dizzy/queazy/headachy and just a bit of rash in my face so I'm sure I'll be fine. Weird. No poisonous spiders here, only one mildly poisonous snake (and that it wasn't ).

I will mention it to my doc, good tip.

    +1 to what Eden said.

Definitely take the Benadryl. I slid my hand over a wasp on the water hose once and my hand swelled up like a balloon and then it itched like crazy! I ended up going to the urgent-care and getting a Z-pack (steroids), which helped immensely.

You might consider seeing a doctor of some sort, even if you don't get any other symptoms. I personally couldn't stand the itching.

I can barely stand to roll up the water hose these days, because I'm wasp-shy.

Yes, you are definitely allergic! I have been stung by a wasp twice on the hand, and both times my hand swelled up like a sausage, but nothing else happened on the rest of my body. Definitely mention it to your doc -- she may recommend an Epi-pen to carry with you from now on. Often the second or subsequent stings are much worse for those allergic.

Hope you're all better soon. Benadryl is definitely a good idea in the meantime.
