Patuxent River ride 2009 - June 13

This year the Oxon Hill club's Patuxent River Rural Legacy ride is on June 13.

Anyone? Bueller?

I've done the 46-miler several times now so I'm aiming for the metric this year. (Hopefully we won't have a heat wave like we did last year.)

That picture is rare for 2 reasons:
1. I'm actually riding in FRONT of my DH. and
2. DH is actually SMILING!!! That man NEVER smiles for pictures. I have a boatload of pictures of him looking all serious...kind of like this one...also taken at last year's ride....(gads...can you just FEEL the humidity???)

Weather should be good for Saturday (fingers crossed!).

How hilly is the 46 mile? MY plans for this weekend were to do a ride in Philly with my sister and nephew, but that fell through. So now I'm wondering if maybe I'll try this one. Been having some asthma trouble though, so definitely not ready for a metric, and wondering if I want to take it easy with the 20-something miler.

It's not particularly hilly as I recall. Does it go up that steep hill near the church, though? I did it about four years ago. I used to ride with Oxon Hill alot. They are a great group!

I thought I saw an elevation profile somewhere for this ride, but I can't find it now.

The ride is designed so that the 24 and 46 mile rides follow the same route, and then just as the 24 milers are almost finished and turn left to go back to the start, the 46 milers go right and keep riding. So you could start the ride planning to do 46 and then decide to cut it short if you're not feeling well. There's also good SAG support, just in case.

As for how hilly is it - it's not flat like a ride on the Eastern shore and there are a few good climbs, but overall it's not that bad. It's definitely not as hard as the Philly Livestrong ride.

As NY biker states, it's hilly, but not extreme. The shorter routes would likely look something similar, as they share some of the same roads...at least in the beginning, I believe.

Is it wrong that I like the organized rides so much. I love riding with my family, but the two nieces who ride and live here are always so busy with other things and ride usually when I'm at work. I love riding in Pittsburgh with my brother in law, or Philly with my sister and other brother in law. I like the safety in numbers thing. So around here, organized rides are a better way to get that. Guess I'm still a road chicken. But also still chicken about going alone to local bike club rides and the like. OY, my hermit ways and my need for riding company, they conflict.

I had a GREAT ride on Saturday. I hope everyone else also enjoyed it.

BTW the photos are posted from the ride. Looks like they hired a pro this year.

Possegal, are you a really fast rider? Because if you're not, you could ride with me from Riley's Lock up to Poolesville tomorrow, 40 something miles. I probably average about 13 mph.

I'll probably be ready to ride around 9 or so.

I am not a fast rider, I average about 12 mph, which seems to be consistent no matter what the terrain. I think my lack of being fast is what keeps me afraid to go to some club ride where I don't know anyone, and why I ride so much better with my family, who have to love me no matter how slow I am.

I would like to do that actually! I would be up for 9AM. I'll have to double check where Riley's Lock is. I'm in Germantown so I'm OK with where Poolesville is.
