Red face Where does this go?

I replaced my stem with a shorter one but I dropped some parts.

I can't figure out where this goes. I have 3 carbon spacers and I couldn't get the aluminum ring to fit inside the stem or under the carbon rings.

    Where does this go?

Do you have a picture of your bike with the old stem that you can use as a guide??

7rider, that would be logical but unfortunately, I didn't. I did finally figure it out. Sheesh! Lost sleep wondering where that silly thing goes.

It looks like the compression ring that goes on top of the headset to hold the pieces in place. The spacers then go on top of that.

It's the crown race, not the compression ring (#8)? How the heck did you knock that loose? They're all the way at the bottom of the steer tube, and they usually take some muscle to remove...

Looking at the pic again, it could definitely be a crown race....I just assumed it was the ring b/c they're much easier to dislodge by accident.

Glad that it's all back together now

It sat snuggly inside the headset, where it comes into contact with the fork thingie. I thought it was to go just under the cane creek red rings but nope, went somewhere else.

If I hadn't been in such a hurry to change out the stem....right before it gets dark....and after I had a long day....and when I was hungry....and forgot to keep the front tire on the floor.....I wouldn't have had this problem.

I hate these kind of pop quizzes.

I just got one of those specialized stems with the shims. Great adjustable stems! How do you like yours?
