I'm looking at bike stands cause I am taking a bike mechanic class so I will be doing my own tune-ups... I'm hoping...plus I want one to better clean my bike...
and so I want a decent bike stand.
What do you recommend?

if you don't like sewing, you haven't found the right fabric
For the price we have been satisfied with the Spin Doctor from Performance. It isn't the cheapest one, I think the one that is around $120-150? It folds up pretty nicely, clamps well. There are sweet Park ones but they were double or triple the price and DH received this as a gift.

I got this one for my Christmas present this year: (I see it's on sale for $140, which is a good price)

A friend recommended it and I have been really satisfied w/it. It's easy to set up and take down, holds the bike securely. I keep my bike much cleaner now that I have the stand.
I haven't advanced to doing my own tuneups, though. Good for you!

We have this one: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=4216 from before Ultimate was bought by Feedback Sports. We've probably had it close to 10 years now, and nary a problem with it. I like the adjustability of it, the independent adjustments, and the fact that I can be as comfortable working on it as DH is. It's very stable too.

This is the one I was talking about. We haven't done much big time maintenance but a lot of bike washing. We did have a plastic piece crack on the first use, they replaced the whole stand and the replacement has gone strong for two years.
I like that at 5'2" I can take it out and wash my bike because it is telescoping. Then DH can make it taller to accomodate himself at 6'2". It makes it one size fits all for us which we can't say about much.![]()

A couple of years ago I bought hubby the Park Tool stand. We've been very pleased with it.
I've got this one by Park,
Xmas present from DH. He thought I was nuts to ask for it, but now I keep his bike tuned. IMSHO, "folding" is really important so you can get it out of the way.
