    Oct 11 rides

Yet another century today and one that was being labeled as a very tough, hilly ride. I almost did not go for I was not looking forward to spending my day climbing hill after hill. However, BF offered much needed words of encouragement and off I went this morning. I'm glad he gave me the push I needed for though there was some tough climbs this was a wonderful century.

We started in Louisville and made our way out to the little town of New Castle - not much there but I love to travel down its Main Street. Once outside of New Castle we were treated to a very long (some said 10 miles) downhill with beautiful scenery along the way. However, we had been warned that this was not a ride of leisure. Once we approached the little town of Lockport the work began in earnest. Three tough, long climbs awaited us. As soon as you finished conquering one another was waiting to greet you. My legs felt dead but they did carry me up each hill and once those three nasty climbs were behind me I found myself in territory I ride on a regular basis so the fun began for me. I spent the remaining fifty miles pushing and attacking each road. I was having a blast and soaking in the beauty that surrounded me. A quick stop in the little town of Bagdad provided some refreshments and food before facing the final 20 miles. Again, I pushed hard in hopes of completing this century in under 6 hours. It was not to be for it took me 6 hours and 7 minutes. Oh well I had a great day on the bike - 100.6 miles with an average speed of 16. 4 mph and an average cadence of 83 rpm.

I can now check this ride off as my 29th completed century. Just one remains for me to ride if I want 30 centuries to my credit by the time the club's season ends on Oct 31.

I did my first cyclocross race today. It was snowing when I left my house, but it stopped by race time. It was windy and in the 30s, with a grey, threatening sky. It was SO much fun! I think I'm hooked...

Stunning pix, Fredwina - 'spesh the first on with the trees all silohetted (sp?).

My Saturday ride was the club race - approx 30kms over a few hills and back into a very strong head wind - no time to stop for pictures at all.

I came in mid-field, but it was a great ride for me. The last 10km I was towing an U15 girl back, making her stay behind me and protected from the wind. Despite me doing almost all the work, we managed to open the gap between us and a chasing group of 4 who were all sharing the work between them. The gap was nearly a minute and a half by the finish line.

I felt really good, extremely tired, did a PB on the course and clocked up 36km in total.

    Did the N2 today.
The group was positively noodling along. I actually stayed with them for the first 12 miles, when I realized that they were noodling because half were going out to Sugarloaf - an 85 mile ride - and so were saving themselves.
    That suited me just fine.
These group rides are really funny. It's like watching television with the remote control in your hand. Ride for a while with one guy. Chat for a bit. Catch up since the last time you rode with him last week/two weeks ago/whatever. Then, move up the line to an old friend, and chat with her for a while. Then, fall back and talk about an upcoming racing clinic with an old pro. And on and on it goes. Talking with one...change the channels, chat with another...change the channel, talk with someone else.
Regardless, it's a GREAT way to pass the morning, and it makes 40 miles go by in a heartbeat.
By the way...DH did the 85 mile route, and - as predicted - they did NOT noodle the whole way. Poor guy is beat!

We had perfect weather today. Nice and cool, from the mid 60's to about a high of 70f. Not a cloud in the sky and just a slight breeze. This was the half way point, where we stopped climbing and got to bomb back down to the truck. About 8.5 miles total.

Just the usual Saturday club ride... with the usual nice October weather:

41F when we started out... 79F by the time we got back from 72 miles plus brunch.

(The usual not-nice October weather is rainy, cloudy, and 45F the whole time. It's been terribly dry, so we really need rain to replenish the aquifers and surface water, but at this point we need it to stay dry so the farmers can finish getting the harvest in. For cycling... I'll take the sunshine )

Amazingly my choice of clothing held up. LS synthetic jersey over SS smartwool baselayer, ancient thin Lycra tights over shorts, light FF gloves, wool socks and toe covers. My fingers and toes got most of their feeling back within an hour of starting out, and although I was slightly warm by the end, it wasn't really uncomfortable, and the only thing I took off was my toe covers (plus opened my jersey zipper).

I just wish I'd brought the little disposable camera I bought for the Lone Star Ride. I have 9 exposures left on it and I just hate to waste the processing chemicals on unexposed film, but I keep forgetting to bring it on rides. There was a sign on the street across from where we ate, that said:
"Car Show & Noodles 11-4" And of course the wonderful fall scenery.

Marcie... that's incredible! I love following your love of riding!

I just got home from my Yellowstone ride, that didn't happen for the 2nd year...Snow and wind was the name of the game in West Yellowstone. The 'drive' to Old Faithful was snowy and Old Faithful gave a wonderful show clouded in fog and steam. Oh well...maybe next year...

Wow! You inspire me! 29 centuries!! I will doing my very first this coming Sunday!

Saturday was my LBS's 10 mile TREK breast cancer awareness charity ride. I got there early and was put to work to help keep an eye on the participants. I met some very great people including a gal that currently has breast cancer. She was cheery and up beat about beating it and I was inspired by her.

Later I went and rode 50 more miles as my last long ride before the century. It was a lovely day.

Beautiful day for riding here! I did 32 miles solo in an area I haven't ridden before. Got a little lost, but found road markers for a century ride and followed them til I was back somewhere that I recognized.

I'm finding that most of my pictures for Flickr these days are coming from my bike trips. :-)
