    Angry Sunburned!!!

So I raced in Almere, Holland on Sunday, it was the Long Course World Championship Triathlon race. But don't get all excited, it was pretty small and I had a HORRIBLE race. But what is worse is the sunburn! My wetsuit is good at rubbing off the sunscreen, leaving me basically unprotected for whatever length of time the race is, in this case, minus the swim time, 8 hours in the sun. It's just now becoming bearable. Some girl in the gym locker room said it looked like a 3rd degree sunburn

how often is a good interval to be checked for skin cancer signs?

Yearly is good for screenings. I need to get mine done - I've been a bit longer than that.

Have you looked at the de soto arm skins/bolero style thingie? You could probably put it on while you're on the bike - no sunscreen required there. I can get my face/ears/tops of thighs while on the bike.

My husband works outside, his boss has been urging him to get his skin checked yearly. I am looking for a dermatologist to start scheduling a yearly check, I am very fair and have a family history of skin cancer. It is either yearly or every 6 months.

In the mean time, aloe that burn up! I find an aloe with lidocaine is heaven sent. I think the brand name is Solarcaine. I feel for you since I have had too many bad sunburns in my life and I am young.

Hope you do better next race. 8 hrs. in sun that is a long time. Yea, I have to see dermatologist again to check up on this mole..that is getting a bit bigger. Last check up was about 3 yrs. ago.

    Another scary-sunburn-while-cycling story:

Over decade ago, we were cycle-touring in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island (briefly breezed through an edge of New Brunswick) for 3 wks... It was over 1,000 kms. in total. On the 2nd day of loaded cycling, I was getting a bad enough burn that I was starting to peel and nearly bleed...happening too quickly even with sunblock. I went to pharmacy in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and the pharmacist there lectured me when he saw the burn. He told me straight way I should wear long-sleeved top...when already it was over 85 degrees F at 100% humidity.

I was scared because I had just started on this summer touring trip! I was nearly in tears because it was a bad start..with many more kms. to go. So we went off the local Salvation Army store down the street and I bought 2 men's cotton long sleeved shirts (with stand up collars) for $4.00 in total. On me, it's loose and cool. So that's what I wore for the rest of the hot, touring trip. I rolled up the sleeves just above my wrists. Obviously before my cycling jersey days!
It was fine. It took several days for my sunburn to heal. painful to take a shower.
