Another reason to wear a helmet

I am only adding my comment, not really proud of the fact but I rarely, if ever, wore my helmet.

Now just wait for the really stupid/ignorant reason, I always thought if I was going to fall off my bike I would just stick my arms out so I would not hurt my head..................ahem, now isn't that just the stupidest comment ever! Plus I didn't like my hair getting messed up............yeah, yeah, I can hear the comments now.

A couple of weeks ago my partner and I were riding off road, no way could any cars have reached us let alone an ambulance. Anyway, I swerved slightly to avoid a large stone, next minute I was heading towards prickly bushes and trying to get back onto the path. Don't remember much after that apart from next minute I appeared to be falling backwards off my bike and managed to land head first onto a rock! Thank goodness I was wearing a helmet, as there were quite a few dents in it.

The pain in my head was awful, thankfully no serious damage done apart from neck had slight whiplash to it.

We then had at least 12 miles to ride home.

I now NEVER EVER go out without my helmet when on my bike.

Oh yes, again thanks to this site, I did a search on helmets after the crash and after all I read, went out and purchased a new helmet.

Thanks, ladies. I'll use both of these stories next time I need to convince someone of the importance of helmets.

As an aside, I had a co-worker who used to ride into work without a helmet. I'd get after him with stories like this - followed by a (sort of ) gentle thwack upside the head.

He's finally wearing a helmet. I'm not sure if my haranging got thru to him or if he simply didn't want to get thwacked any more, but it matters not.

In NZ, its a legal requirement... on bicycles and on motorbikes... you HAVE to have helmets on... or you get fined!

On a group ride a few weeks ago in bad, wet weather, one of our members lost control crossing some rr tracks and landed on the pavement hard on her shoulder and head. She had quite a crack in her helmet. Thanks to her helmet though, she got back on the bike and fininshed the ride. She is sporting a shiny new helmet now and intends to keep the cracked one to show her kids and any helmet naysayers.

I never leave the driveway without my helmet - it's like a seatbelt, I feel totally naked without it.
