WTB: bike for girlfriend

hello,

i'm looking for an affordable bike for my gf so she can come ride with me on leisurely rides. needs to fit someone that is 5'1". also...she has some back and other orthopedic issues...some i'm looking for something comfy! slack geometry...and i've seen these hybrid type bikes with front fork suspension as well as suspension seat post.

if anyone has one they're willing to part with or knows of any leads, let me know!

CSme - you didn't post where on the globe you live - this is a world wide forum. That being said, your best bet is to go to your local bike shop and talk to them. For bike fit, your GF will need to be in on this.

i realize the internet is global. but generally, on ebay and on internet classifed sections, people are willing to ship things and have things shipped so i did not find it necessary to disclose my exact location until i found a seller. will spend xtra and go to LBS if needed. we wanted to see if we could save a few bucks by going used first.

If she has back and orthopedic issues, you will not be able to determine the proper fit and comfort without putting her on various bikes.

Don't be pennywise and pound foolish. Either sacrifice her comfort for a few bucks or go to a decent LBS. Hybrids aren't expensive enough to get much in the way of discounts unless you luck into just the right used bike. Even so, she has to hae the right fit which cannot be accomplished through the internet.

i befriended a bike fitter at the LBS. we got fitted for free. so we have an idea of the general geometry we need. now we're just looking for cheap. me...i spend thousands on bike stuff...i've probably spent $15K in the last 8 months. she thinks i'm the dumbest person on the planet for it and refuses to spend more than $350...i figure i can get higher quality by going used on such a low budget.

Perhaps your GF is one of those people who need to go through a 'bargain bike' phase the first time around they get a bike. It's pretty common. Then as they ride more, they slowly get to experience the little things that might be lacking (appropriate frame, geometry, weight, fit, good quality components...). If the biking catches on with her, she'll outgrow the cheapo bike in about a year and want something that feels and works smoother for her. That's not the end of the world.
Sometimes you just have to let people find out stuff in their own time.

There ARE plenty of $350 new bikes around in bike shops- I still feel it's more important to have her test ride her new bike than it is to take a chance on a better used bike bought without a test ride. There are so many variables besides geometry. Others might feel differently.

Have you tried craigslist? There are generally lots of bikes for sale for pretty reasonable prices and they'd be in your area so she could give them a test ride first. I think that it is nice that you are helping her find a bike. I must have ridden 20 different bikes before I found one that I liked. Even though they all had the same basic geometry, I was amazed at how different one bike was from another. I agree with your thinking that you can get higher quality by going used. Another advantage to finding a bike on craigslist or local is that you don't have to spend some of that $$ for shipping (usually around 50+ bucks). Good luck and check the forum on a regular basis. You never know what might pop up!
I am one of those who bought the budget bike first and then found a nicer bike later. I think that overall, this is a wise choice. In my opinion, it is better to shell out a little $$ and test the waters instead of shelling out the big $$ and finding out that riding really isn't your cup of tea.
