You CAN still register for Danskin Seattle

I attended the Danskin Triathlon seminar last night at REI in Seattle. They ARE allowing sign up/registration for the race at the seminars.. held for "first timers". So if you know anyone who couldn't get registered online, they need to go to the last seminar (see ://www.danskin.com/seminardates.html) Once you've attended, there is registration afterwards.

In addition, Sally Edwards is a hoot, and full of energy and motivation! The seminar is really targeted at beginners, but is fun to be at even if you are not a complete beginner.

For those of you Seattle area people worried about swimming in OW / Triathlon swim / transitions, a company called Mary Meyer Life Fitness was at the Danskin seminar last night. You can attend Open Water swim clinics on any number of dates (each clinic has beginner to expert training levels available). They also offer basic triathlon clinics, which include not only swimming, but transitions, bike and run help.

I signed up for one on July 12 --- after my first tri of the season, but I'm sure it will still help me. I don't know anyone who's attended one, so cannot say if I'd recommend it or not.

They are held at Lake Washington.

They also have a five-clinic tri novice package that I signed up for: one pool clinic, one OWS clinic, one tri clinic, and two clinics of your choice. Teigyr told me about Mary Meyer and I'd been looking at the website for a few weeks and pondering what to sign up for.

Hey- I was there too! Only I was standing around in that ubiquitous green vest trying to answer questions about "open-water swim goggles" when they let y'all out of the seminar.

Good grief. My only real beef with the seminar program is I feel they try to push gear on to new triathletes as a way to alleviate anxiety. Last year it was heart-rate monitors, this year apparently it's special goggles. There were several women who looked at me in disbelief when I said I used my regular goggles in the lake just fine, and that whatever fits your head well will work well.

But it was fun to pop all those pink balloons after work. Yes, we did give some away to kids and such.

I was glad they presented some practical info and didn't just do the "you must buy this stuff" thing. I heard a similar shpiel at the bike show in Feb. and it was a little more "buy this service"-oriented. Happy to get info, but I don't feel any obligation to buy stuff or services. I'm glad I've had the tri info on this board to contemplate so I don't feel like I HAVE to buy anything in particular. The swim clinics, I really do want to do.

d'oh! I meant to go to that. Turns out I worked late anyway...but still it completely slipped my mind.

Another thing about Mary Meyer is they will do individual coaching if you need it. I met with someone 2-3 times to do one-on-one open water swimming. It was really reasonable and worked well for people (like me) who can't always make it to group sessions.
