Men's road bikes

DH asked me to post asking for new bike suggestions for him as well. He has an older Trek 5000 carbon road bike and he wants to upgrade to a good carbon bike with ultegra or better components. He is not interested in anything too aggressive because he has some back issues and doesn't like to be too low (athough he wants to do TT's so he's definitely not looking for a 'comfort' bike either, lol).

He's looked at the Madone, and the Roubaix and the Tarmac, and now he's looking at some of the Cervelos as well. He hasn't ridden any of them yet, just looking and doing some research. Price range is $3000-4500. It'll probably be his last road bike so he's willing to pay for a good one.

Any other bike he should be considering?

I would also look at the Jamis Xenith, along with the ones you have already listed.

He was just looking at the online reviews of the Cervelo R3 and it sounds like it's the kind of bike he's looking for. A race bike for people with back problems - more upright geometry.

We're off to look at bikes today. I like bike shopping.

How about a Merckx? Click on "frames", and it shows lots, they may even have some left from previous years he may be able to get a deal on.

I also just read the Axel Merckx has a climbing clinic coming up in Kelowna. Maybe he has connections .

A guy I ride with had back surgery just about a year ago and is pretty fast on his Seven Odonata (faster than me for sure! he just comes out with this group to get some miles). I don't know what current model would have similar geometry - and I doubt they're within that price range - but he can dream can't he

Has he tried one? I have one, and it was love at first ride. They're super comfortable, super fast (even though I'm not) and owning one has been fabulous. They're designed especially for super distance ("century geometry") riding, but I just use mine 'round the hood, and commuting to work. Their also amazing in wind.

Mine was not really very expensive for what it is. I could have spent more on a Specialized.

I think you mean the Cervelo RS, not the R3. The RS has a headtube that's about 2cm taller than the R3. It is a sweet bike, one that I'm coveting.

You can get the Cervelo stock setup for about $4K. Or buy the frame plus a build kit (http://www.all3sports.com/product_in...ervelo-rs-2008) and spend more or less (w/Ultegra kit is about $3500).

I have an older Trek 5000 (man bike) and a lovely Colnago. I would give the Colnago range a look too.

I have a Scott CR 1 -carbon with ultegra. I use it as a TT bike as well as my long distance bike. Comfy and aerodynamic. I like the price of these as well.

Seconding what Trek said, I also have a colnago and that's been a great bike as well.

You say he's looked at the Madone - what about a Pilot? Less aggressive position, and still a really nice bike. It looks like the 5.0 comes with Ultegra.

He hasn't ridden the Madone yet - going to try it next weekend. Right now, he's loving the Cervelo R3 though.
