    Maine Anyone?

DH and I are going to Maine on the 22nd of this month. We'll fly into Portland on Saturday and stay there until Monday morning, then drive up to Bar Harbor and play around Acadia National Park for a couple of days. We think we want to hike and bike (we're not taking the bikes, we'll have to rent) in and around the park. We may also go kayaking, if the weather cooperates. Does anyone have any suggestions about anything else we should do or see?

I am sorry I cannot answer your question, but your post is interesting to me because my dh often mentions it as a place he to consider moving one day heading into semi-retirement years.

I will be very interested to hear about the how the cycling is like what the roads are like and what the temps are at this time of year.

I hope you get others to help answer your question.

I'd recommend going to the Schoodic Peninsula part of Acadia in addition to the main part of the park. It's not on Mt. Desert Island - it's actually further to the east - so many people skip it when they go to the park. I think it's absolutely beautiful. (If you look in my Circles, parks, and funny birds gallery referenced below - the Schoodic Peninsula photos are in a separate gallery there.)

I have some journals about biking in and around Acadia, but they are hosted on crazyguyonabike.com, and Neil is in the process of rebuilding the disks for the site (today and tomorrow). It will be back online on the 12th, and I'll write myself a note to come back here then and post links to my journals then.

In the meantime, here are links to my photo galleries from visits to Acadia over the last 2 years:
Wandering by bike in Downeast Maine - June 2005
Circles, parks, and funny birds - June 2006
    Acadia National Park (September 2006)

I'll actually be there next week. I'm heading to Maine on the 18th, and will be in Bar Harbor (and wandering around Acadia) from the 21st through the 24th. Sounds like we'll just miss each other...

JoAnn, your husband and I think alike! I'm really tired of the southern heat and humidity, but my DH thinks I wouldn't last one winter "up north!"

Denise, thanks for the advice. Too bad we'll miss each other; it would be nice to actually meet you. I've actually read your journals on Crazy Guy, and when I found the cheap airfare to Portland, I went back and reread them. I'll have to show DH the pictures this week. We'll be sure to check out the Schoodic Peninsula. So sorry about your brother . . .

If you go make sure you go to the Jordan Pond House in the park for tea and popovers, and the lobster bisque is to die for. We always sit outside in the back where the beautiful gardens are and the pond and mountains are the background. A great stop after a day of hiking or biking. You'll love Acadia, its one of my favorite places!
