new coworker

I have a challenging situation at work to deal with. I had an absolutely wonderful work partner (WWP) until last week. WWP moved out of the area and had to take a new job. My new partner (NP) is so different and establishing a relationship with NP is going to take effort. I plan to have a pleasant chat soon to open communication, listen to suggestions, and avoid problems, but NP has such a STRONG personality that I feel I'll have to make all the adjustments while biting my tongue in half. I miss WWP terribly.
This situation, at best, will reach compromise. At its worst, I'll feel trapped despite efforts to deal with it using my best coping skills.
Any ideas?

sounds like you have the right idea. She/he could be really nervous about you too.

Thanks for the encouragement, Mimitabby. Anxiety may be a component here. I'll keep this in mind when I talk with my coworker.

Yup, I was thinking the same. I tend to come over arrogant when I'm nervous too, unfortunately. I hate feeling timid, so I end up being bossy instead...

Some of it may be different communication styles too. I'm introverted, cranky and I grew up near enough to New York that I picked up lots of that communication style. For someone with a more traditionally Southern or Midwestern communication style, I come off as very harsh and even nasty. Trying hard to do better on that.
