    bike for first triathlon

Yesterday I registered for my first triathlon It's a 'super sprint' type (200m/12k/2k) and it's August 19th. I thought it would be perfect for my first time. I'm not a runner (yet) and my swimming is so so

My question is : I have a mountain bike (specialized hardrock) that I ride on the road with slick tires. Would this be ok for my first tri? It's only 12k. I don't really want to invest this year in a good road or tri bike cause I'm not even sure I'll like it. My goal would be to FINISH the race not WIN the race

    What do you all suggest?

I'd say ride the bike you have and have a great time!

(I rode a commuter hybrid in a tri last year, no problem!)

    coolio

Hey, it's cool if you want to use your mtn bike for the tri. I did until i got meself a road bike.

At the tri's i've done down this way, there's always someone on a mtn bike with slicks.

Actually I think i saw someone on a mtn bike at the 1/2 IM in may...

Have fun! Don't be put off by all the nice bikes while on the course, just go out there and do the enticer distance!

Today there were even MTBs with knobby tires so don't worry.

Oh yeah- race with what you've got! My first race I was soooo intimidated by all the fancy schmancy bikes that I felt very out of place- but you know what? I finished ahead of some of those fancy schmancy bikes so it's true that it's the machine behind the bike that makes it fast.

Sounds like a great first tri distance! What fun!!!!!
