I've heard that you're not supposed to wear underwear with cycling shorts. Is this true? Sorry for the newbie dumb question.

The answer is:
Yes,
otherwise, the elastic in your panties could rub you raw in the wrong places!![]()
Don't wear your underwear.

Underwear also creates extra moisture - this can lead to additional yeast infections. Go without underwear with the cycling shorts.
Though you're not "supposed" to wear underpants with bike shorts, some people do.
I wear simple cotton panties under my bike shorts and I don't seem to have any problems with that. No yeast infections, no chafing, etc. It sure saves wear and tear from constantly laundering expensive shorts! Have ridden thousands of miles, and up to 40 mile rides with no issues so far, but will monitor the situation when I start doing longer 60 mile rides this summer.

Yeah Jenn, underwear's fine if you're going 10-15 miles and they're comfy briefs/bikinis/boyshorts/whatever... even up to 20 something... but after that, no matter what they are, I really start noticing the wear and tear on the delicate bits...![]()
