Computer issue..

When the LBS mounted DH's computer on his bike they put it pretty far down on his front fork. Mine, they mounted it way at the top. For whatever reason yesterday, my numbers were all over the place. I was climbing a good size hill and it was showing 12mph and well we ALL know there was NO WAY I was doing no 12mph up this puppy, more like MAYBE 4. Anyway, I noticed that once I got on a flat, it would show like 15mph then jump around to 24 then 12....argh....it was so irritating. Do you think just re-positioning it lower on the fork where DH's will fix it. I hate to unmount it, they put it on pretty good at the LBS.

Check that the wheel magnet and the pick-up sensor are passing very close together. Sometimes the pick-up sensor just twists a bit and gets too far from the wheel. If you have a wireless sensor, check if there is IR interference from another gadget.

Thanks Deb, I'll do that, yes, it's wireless but you don't think my heart monitor that is also mounted on it next to the handlebars would do it do you?

Were you riding with DH? Is his wireless too? Maybe you were picking up his signal along with yours. I know my HR monitor did that when I rode too closely to someone else. Maybe the same thing can happen with wireless computers.

If you had the unit for a year or so, you might also check the battery.

There are several things that can give you a bad reading.

1. As DebW pointed out, magnet has to be pretty close to the pickup sensor.
2. As li10up pointed out, interference from other wireless computers and HRM.
3. a weak battery
4. bad battery connection or a dirty connection.
5. a damaged computer

first one is easy to check, the second one go out and ride on your own to see if the reading is normal or not.

If it isn't the first two check the battery and the battery connection inside.

I had a Cat-Eye wireless and I really hated it for just that reason. It was always all over the place and the batteries would wear out really quickly. The thing never seemed to be able to hold a consistant speed (really handy when you are riding in a paceline NOT) and everthing under the sun would interfere with it. I decided to go wired again after that.
