Unhappy IMAZ Training log, the Pluerisy edition....

As most of you know by now, I have a lung infection and a wonderful thing called pluerisy. Basically it's inflamation of the lung tissue- or pleura. I started noticing it on my swim monday and it got progressively worse. My lungs HURT. I felt fine, but my lungs hurt and I started coughing up little yellow balls of gook. So Thursday I saw the doc and he gave me the diagnosis and the fabled Z PACK. The bad thing is I'm almost done with the pack, but I'm not better yet. Yes I do feel a bit better, but I'm still coughing up gunk, and my lungs still hurt when I cough. Though I would say they are about 90%

Well, that was until I did a STOOPID thing today!! Yes, in my infinite wisdom I decided to ride long this morning. I had a 100 miler planned but figured I'd just do 50 and not risk anything. That was not the smartest thing to do. I came off my bike feeling really weak and when I coughed I thought my lungs were going to burst out of my chest. YOUCH did they hurt!!! They didn't bother me while I was riding. I tried to take it easy, and I definitely did not feel like myself on the bike, but I did ok. But as soon as I got off the bike I knew I made a huge mistake.
As I type this now they are feeling a bit better, and I haven't been coughing anything up. But man I hope I didn't screw things up worse!
Yesterday I decided to test the waters (literally) by going for a swim. I did fine, no issues there, so I figured I'd be ok this morning. Oh man was I wrong. (insert picture of Denise whacking herself on the head).
So tomorrow I will call the doctor and see if he thinks that chest x ray is in order. And no. I will not train until I am COMPLETELY out of the woods. I am beyond frustrated, but I have to get better!! But trying to train through this is obviously not working! So here I am... Surfing the net instead of enjoying the beautiful day on my bike... sigh.... (insert tiny violin players)
So anyhoo, here was my week FWIW....
Sunday: off family day (did 80 miles sat)
Monday: Swim 2000 mtrs- lungs starting to hurt
Tuesday: Run 15 miles in am (hack all day at work) and then ride for an hour in pm
Wednesday: Ride/Run brick planned. Only got 1 hour ride in. Lungs killing me.
    Thursday: Doctor. Couch surfing
    Friday: couch surfing again...ugh
Saturday: swim 2000 mtr. Feeling pretty good.
Sunday: 50 miles in 3:13. NOT GOOD! No way I could run off the bike.

I hope everyone has a healthy happy week!
    Ciao!

I hope you get better soon! On the upside, your training is going great. Taking some time to heal won't set you back at all.

Denise - I'm really serious now. Don't screw around with pleurisy. You will just keep inflamming that tissue. I had a friend with pluerisy that ended up taking months to heal because she wouldn't back off and kept doing too much too soon.

Remember, you only lose 1% of your cardiovascular fitness if you take one week off - completely. After that it goes much faster. So, take it easy. Talk to your coach and get some feedback from him/her.

Honestly, if it was me, I'd take a week off.

    REST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know that you will get better faster if you just bite the bullet and rest....

You can do it...take strength from all of the people that rest all of the time. If they can do it, you can do it!

Denise- I have to second both Wahine and RnR, pleurisy is nothing to mess with- take some time off, visualize the inflammed tissue healing up and you flying thru your training, honestly visualizing what you want now will likely work a lot better than forcing your body to do it at the moment.
Nothing like the power of the mind at a time like this
Just focus that power on healing would ya not on rubbing the heck out of that poor inflammed pleura
    The cure for anything is salt water;
    sweat, tears or the sea
