    Wind-burn prevention

Do any of you ladies have a recommendation of a cream or lotion that will help prevent wind-burn?

I was out hiking the other weekend on a very blustery day and ended up with very chapped cheeks (facial ones). That reminded me that I'd also had the same problem last year when out cycling. Even on rides during which I was 90% in the shade and wearing at least an SPF15, I'd come home looking as if I were sun-burned, but it was more a chapped effect than a burn. My conclusion was that it was wind-burn.

My regular moisturizer and sunscreen didn't seem to help. Any ideas or tips out there to prevent this without clogging my pores?

My alpine skiing friend recommended a certain type of greasy stuff to apply a thin layer of just before you go out in the cold wind. It makes sense that grease would work better than lotions or creams (which tend to be water based). Perhaps a lanolin (sheep's natural skin oil) based ointment would work well too?

I use "Dermatone" -- you can find it in small tins that fit nicely in a bike pack or pocket (in Amazon, outdoor gear shops and some bike shops). It is not perfect (perhaps one should lather it up more generously than I do), but works better than any other lotion I have tried.

I use Vichy, which is very effective at keeping the skin hydrated. I put it on before I go cycling and immediately upon my return. I am out on my bike almost every day, and most days I am cycling against some serious head and side winds. Of course, I put it on in the morning and at night also.

The only thing I can think of would be the great green wonder can: Bag Balm. Not sure if it would cause your face to break out, however. A little can go a long way so is should be used sparingly. It my be worth a shot.

Dermatone is great. It's nice and greasy so it provides an effective layer that prevents both wind and sun burn. It's convenient to carry (a small tin), and it really helped me when I recently spent a week in the Egyptian desert (both wind and sun). Anything that's too much of a liquid is absorbed fairly quickly, whereas the thicker the product, the longer it stays on my face. My 3 cents.
