Hey everyone--I'm looking to do the TransAm tour this summer, and I bought some LOOK (keo) pedals and a nice pair of Carnac road shoes. I haven't attached anything yet (my bike's due to arrive this week), but some tourers have been pushing me more towards mountain bike shoes. Can anyone give me a pro and con about using Road shoes vs using MTB shoes? I only have a few days left until I can return them, so I'd appreciate any help and opinions.

As much as I'm a diehard roadie pedals for road bike type person (I'm a Look pedal user since Greg LeMond made them famous), I'd switch to a pair of my mountain bike shoes with Cook Bros pedals, probably the Candies, for riding cross country. This is because I'd spend a lot more time walking around and in weird situations - like mud in campgrounds or parks. Keos do not shed mud while Cook Bros pedals don't know the meaning of the word mud.

I agree. For touring you definitely want something walkable. Crank Bros make some pretty light weight pedals.

I'd agree. If you are going to be in situations where you are walking a bit - (particulary in muddy or dirty conditions such as campgrounds) which is pretty much inevitable when touring mountain bike shoes are much more convenient
