I'm going crazy. And not in a good way.

Why, might you ask, are you bummed out this morning, telegirl?

    1. Raindrops keep falling on my head. And I refuse to sing that song anymore. At least if it was snowing or freezing, I could drop on my studded tires and ride the dirt roads or snowmobile trails. But mud season #12 isn't letting me get out. And I just can't get my head wrapped around sitting down cellar on the trainer. And I am shocked that I keep gaining weight...really, I'm shocked (hand me another brownie, please).

    2. Cyclocross bike is back ordered. Have the pedals. Have some new shoes. No bike. So I get out the pedals and clip them onto the shoes and sit and look at my feet. For some reason, that is distinctly unsatisfying. Even when I pretend to pedal and make wind noises.

    3. Haven't done as much road riding as I would have liked to. After one too many close calls, I figured that if I was going to have a life altering bike accident, I would rather have it in the woods than with a car. But I miss it. A lot.

    4. I hate being whiney and the only way to get out of that for me is on my bike, so now we are back to reason # 1.

Great sympathy here/.... cycling deprivation is harsh!

Look for better roads! (Fight for better roads!) Or ... don't warp your head around it... just get that stupid trainer set up and pound out a few minutes on i9t. You *don't* have to play "raindrops" in the background but sanity is something the world really needs...

Telegirl, while I can sympathize with your plight - get out and ride in the rain! Pretend it's a cross race and the rain is just part of the training. Of course I would suggest you use the studded tires and ride off road, maybe in the woods if it's not a torrenial downpour. I rode in the rain yesterday because I've been dieing to ride my mtb after I made some upgrades. Man, are my legs sore from slogging through the wet sandy/clay trail, but I felt better after I went out.

Forgive my poor memory, but someone just posted about running in a downpour and how fun it was after. Remember when we were kids and couldn't wait to play in the rain and the puddles? Release your inner child!

If you miss road riding, I second what Geonz said - look for roads that feel safer to you. They may be roads with little traffic, or roads that are a little wider, maybe with a paved shoulder. And - take the road as needed. Ride as far out in the driving lane as you need to to feel safe.

I know that you can overcome this fear if road riding is something you want to do.

    Well

I don't have a big choice of roads. They are what they are near my house - very few of them have shoulders to ride on, most are fairly twisty, with limited visibility. I would have to drive for a significant time to find roads that are safer than where I live. There was not one road ride this year that I didn't have a close call (and by close call, I mean I had to leave pavement and dive off into the ditch) road riding- And my mileage on the roads is over 2K this season, so that is a lot of ditch time. I just don't see it as 'overcoming a fear', Denise - it has gotten to a point where the joy of riding is outweighed by the knowledge that I am going to be going off-road at some point in the ride or maybe worse.

But you are right, Dar- I'm just not a big fan of riding dirt roads in the rain and the single track we have is not ridable in the rain - too many roots and rocks. But I should just quit my moaning and just get out....I guess it is just too many complaints at once and the rain just makes me want to SCREAM!!

Are you riding far enough out into the road so that the cars know they need to move around you? I find that works for me on the narrow roads around here, but I'm not dealing with the kind of hills that I'm sure you are, and the roads are probably not as twisty as your Vermont pavement.

Or are you saying that the roads are so twisty and the cars are driving so fast that there is no way that they will see you in time? That would be an absolute bummer. And I certainly hear what you are saying about "ditch time".

You are exactly right, Tygab - Around Burlington is much more bike-friendly. I live in the back-woods of Central VT and more often than not, get into little verbal sparing with my neighbors about whether bikes have a 'right to be on the road' - and let me tell you, most people give me and my biker friends a very hard time about 'sharing the road'. A friend was almost killed by someone in a truck hitting him on the road (the guy was drunk) and there have been several deaths- there are complaints galore....The constable kind of shrugs and says 'well, maybe you shouldn't ride'....like that's an option.

But I did my trainer last night, while watching the rain come down....and maybe I will get in a ride on the dirt roads on my mountain bike tonight, although it is supposed to rain again.....I think I just need an attitude adjustment! Or a bottle of wine....
