well, almost, off to my solo tour. Not sure where to post this to y'all, so i thought i would just let you know. I'm leaving for Portland, OR, tonight, and in a few days I will embark on a 2 month trip to toronto.

I really wish you a wonderful adventure. I did lots of self-contained touring in the late '70's-early 80's - NZ, USA, Europe. There is nothing like it and you will collect stories for the rest of your drinking life (and an audience!)
Advice? (Feel like I should give you something as I am so *old* and *wise*)
Get good maps and stay on small roads.
Eat local food and accept invitations. People are concerned with making sure that something bad doesn't happen to you in their county, so they invite you. (Rather than them being the local axe murderer thinking "Bwahahah!")

Have a blast!

Don't pack the underwear. After riding a bike for hours a day, day after day, the last think you'll need is underwear. When I tour, I bring skirts for off the bike to get maximum breezage.

Remember, you can always purchase something you need on the road (like warmer fall/winter clothes). And if you overpack, just mail stuff home to yourself.

I was assuming that she will update her crazyguyonabike journal from the road since she gave us the url in the first post in this thread.

In my experience, it's not always easy to post here from the road. I carry a small handheld device that I purchased back in 2002. It only has dial-up access, and attempting to access anything other than a text-based site is extremely painful. I've tried to access the TE forums when I'm on the road but it's way too slow - so I update my crazyguyonabike journals, and I assume that folks who want to follow along will look there. Folks that are traveling and relying on libraries for Internet access are often time-limited too. (Of course if Rai Sue is carrying a full PC with cellular access, she could be wandering over here too - and in that case my comments are completely invalid...)

Towns in Nova Scotia that had information centers had internet access. In some towns it was free and in some you had to pay. Most of the hotels and B & Bs we stayed at also had free internet access. It was kind of surprising.

That's how Cindy and I were able to post updates here from the road.
