    Yellowstone spring biking

    Hey,

Those of you interested in spring biking in Yellowstone, here's the link with the scoop, from the park's Web site. This gives you the days when over-snow travel stops and they start to plow, but plowing/melting can take a long time, and is unpredictable, because we've had a monster snow year.

Instead, I am planning to bike there shortly AFTER they open the roads to cars, BECAUSE then lodging will be available at Mammoth Hot Springs (and there's a lodging price break if you book by April 1). The park is so large that unless you camp inside it or stay at Mammoth hotel, it's tough to cover much ground on a day trip. Popular day trips are in the West entrance and to Norris, or even Old Faithful, and back, but I really want to spend two days.

I did the fall YNP tour, too, mentioned here

and it was great, 62 miles round trip from West to Old Faithful, VERY little traffic and pretty cool (52 high?) but a great ride.

My tenative plan this spring is to drive to West Yellowstone and spend the night on Thursday, May 11. Wake up and bike to Mammoth Hot Springs (about 50 miles, a decent amount of climbing), spend the night, wash the tights, etc., then bike back to West Yellowstone on Saturday.

Anybody interested in joining me? I haven't made room reservations yet, but I don't anticipate it being busy... that's why they're having a sale ... I think the bottom rate is $49. And they do have a hot tub.
