Bear cubs

Out on my ride today, a bear cub dashed out of the bush and ran across the road. This was about 50 ft in front of me. At first I thought it was a large dog so I jammed on my brakes and came to a rapid stop. Just as I realized it was a bear cub, it hit me that I didn't see momma bear. As the goosebumps formed I hear noise in the bush, and as my life started to flash before my eyes out scampers bear cub 2 and 3. I have seen many black bears as well as cubs in the wild, but never have I been so close and exposed. And i have never seen three cubs at once. Hardly breathing and with a death grip on my one ounce bear spray canister I waited a few minutes to see if momma bear was going to make an appearance. Thankfully she never appeared. Whew! I had visions of being dinner!

That would have raised my heart rate way higher than the steepest hill repeats! Yikes!
