I am so pleased to keep hearing more and more news stories detailing positive shifts in bike friendly communities in Maryland, especially on the Eastern Shore.
In Salisbury, we have a new community leader who is pushing grants through the state to get new bike lanes that connect the college, hospital and downtown. He has support from the college (the Seagull Century Foundation) and some other groups.
Also, the paving plan for this year was announced from the state recently and one of the major college roads (CAMDEN) is getting lanes on both sides, without our initiative having to push for it.
We have some folks coming in town today from the League of American Bicyclist's and Bike Maryland for a bicycle friendly community workshop tomorrow night.
I also know that Berlin, MD and Rehobeth, DE have big bike friendly plans in process that connect major points with walk-able and bike-able lanes.
I cycle almost every day, here in my town. It is not that friendly (YET). About half the vehicles I encounter do not seem to know bike laws and/or don't show me respect (right of way or personal space-three foot law). It's frustrating and sometimes, scary. We've had a few deaths too. I know all communities deal with these issues but these new initiatives excite me. I can't wait for more and more people to become aware of us and make things better for everyone on the road.
