    Low Energy Level

I was in the hospital for 6 days for gall bladder removal and some related complications. I was discharged 2 weeks ago, and I basically feel fine, no more pain, etc.

I seem to be having trouble getting my energy level back to normal. One day I feel fine, and the next I just want to lay around and do nothing. Today is a stunning, sunny, 65 degree day, and I would love to be on my bike, but I can't seem to muster up the energy to get out there.

I recouperated at home for 1.5 weeks and really took it easy, tried to eat well, and go for small walks, etc. Anyone have any thoughts about how to build my energy level back up? Thanks!

    Slowly.
Even though you feel "fine," your body had a major trauma. You need more rest than usual to repair what was invaded, even if you had laparoscopy. I've had limited personal experience with this, but the one time I was "cut," I didn't do anything but walk for the first 6 weeks and then I went back to my regular gym routine. I was only 28 at the time and I still needed this amount of time.

You are what we call "de-conditioned". It happens very, very rapidly after an illness or surgical procedure. Some physicians think of it as a form of anesthesia "jet lag". You need to do what you have been doing which is listening to your body. Exercise when you feel up to it and rest when you need to. It may take up to 6 weeks before you are back to your normal. Longer if your "normal" is insane.

Thanks, both of your responses made me feel better. I guess since the physical pain was gone, I thought I was back to normal.

    My "normal" is not insane

I will continue to take it easy. It is just amazing how much it takes out of you. "Jet lag" is a good way to describe how I feel today. Slow, sluggish, tired.
