Hello All, some great, interesting and inspiring stories here. I've been reading for a couple of days and registered today so I could join in. Some of the stories are of such courage! I am reading about women who never rode a bike before and getting on one and learning as an adult. Just amazing. We women are a resiliant and resouceful group of individuals.
I'm not new to riding because I rode a lot as a kid but have not been riding in many many years. It's true, you never forget how to ride a bike, but that does not mean you can hop back on one after years and immediatly get back up to your old skill level. It's almost but not quite was like learning all over again. Now as an older adult there is a lot more fear of falling and an overall sense of being timid on the bike and a bit unsteady. Within two months much of that confidence has returned and the skill level has improved rapidly. I attribute a lot of that to having been athletic earlier on in life.
So I have read with empathy and sympathy some of the stories of courage here, feels like this will be good company to be in.
I look forward to more reading and hopefully I can contribute a grain or two of knowledge or encouragement at some point.
Oh, about my moniker - I like to write also and have a blog that I started about biking with arthritis and pedaling to health when I started riding a couple of months ago. Here is the link if you choose to read it, http://pedaltohealth.blogspot.com/

Hello Bikewriter, Welcome to the forum. I am pretty new here myself. I have been around a couple of weeks.![]()
I like your blog and shall enjoy reading about how you're getting on. My knees are not what they were, following pregnancy, so I'm also hoping that cycling will help. Hello and welcome!

This really is a very friendly place to be and the source of a wealth of knowledge about cycling, bike maintenance, riding and good old fashioned sharing of experience and experiences. I read of a lot of hopes and dreams and stories of success.
To answer Zen I am riding a Schwinn Gateway. It's one of the lower end Schwinns and came from Target I believe, I picked it up from craigslist second hand but it was only 3 months old when I got it and in excellent shape. It will do the job for me until my riding skills reach another level and then I'm sure I'll be looking for something else.
It's got fenders, a big wicker basket that I added to it, a bell (another add on) and comfort galore, the bike has 7 speeds and I l-o-v-e it!
I'd post a picture of it but I am unsure of how to do that, it seems that you can post a link to a photo on the web but not off of your hard drive. Maybe I need to upload photos to photobucket or something like that.

Make sure you're in the "advanced" reply window, then scroll down and click "Manage Attachments." That will give you the option to upload a picture from your hard drive. There are size limits ... not sure off the top of my head what they are, but if you try to upload a picture that's too big, it will tell you.
