Ordinary short-reach brake levers for small hands

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I’ve tried to search the threads, but the majority of discussion on this subject involves drop bars.

I’m setting up a bike for my wife and need advice on simple, but good quality brake levers for small hands. These will be for upright, not drop bars.

I thought it was a simple choice with the Tektro R100A. But, I now learn that these are aero levers best suited to drop bars and not so well suited to upright bars.

So, can anyone advise the best value option for standard brake levers for small hands on an upright handlebar setup?

If the thickness of the bar grips is an issue in matching small hands to short-reach levers, please advise me on this matter, too. Please.

    Thank you.

Many (most?) brake levers for straight bars have a reach adjust screw. So you might not see "short reach " listed as a feature since virtually all of them have this adjustment.

For example, it's the blue colored screw in the front of the Tektro RS360A lever at the top of this web page:

While looking on the Tektro web site for a picture that shows the the reach adjusting screw I noticed they have a category called "Junior MTB" that includes a few different levers. Third category down on this web page:

    '09 Trek 7.3 FX hybrid / Jett 155mm
    '09 Cervelo P3 TT / looking
    '11 Cervelo S3 road / Selle Royal Seta 155mm
Ischial tuberosities: 140mm center to center

I have small hands and have recently converted my bike from road bars to upright, straight bars. We installed Shimano B L-R550 Brake Levers on my bike and they work great. They are also adjustable to decrease the reach if needed.

I am sure there will be other suggestions, but this is what has worked for me.

Many thanks. I found those Shimano levers in silver. They look perfect for the need.

    Thank you, again.

For those in the market for nice retro looking brake levers, these are on sale for only $12.29.
