Seattleites go their own way under their own steam by bike

Cyclists wait for the Seattle-to-Bainbridge ferry run during the Chilly Hilly bicycle ride in February. With a cadre of hard-core riders, cycling culture in Seattle grows more diverse and eclectic every year.
MORE THAN a thousand bicycles are jammed onto the ferry as it pulls into the Bainbridge Island dock on this unseasonably warm winter day. Nervous as racehorses at the gate, the cyclists champ and stir next to their bikes, lightly touching their handlebars as cleats click out a steady beat on the deck.

Somebody starts ringing a bicycle bell, and soon other bells are ping-ping-pinging. Then, above it all, a solo war whoop, which becomes a chorus of shouts, a rock concert of cheering and hollering and bottled-up energy let loose. It's as if all the riders are thinking the same thing:

Just finished the article in Sunday NW section. The got it right - freedom. I'm getting a little older and every time I'm out on my bike I'm thankful. I see my friends becoming unable to do some things and I'm just grateful that I can do what I can. I ride out on Issaquah-Hobart and beyond. Right now I'm annoyed with the weather. I've been caught in lots of rain lately!!
