    Reality Check

I went for my first real road ride of the year today - I was fairly apprehensive to see how much conditioning I lost.

Half way through the ride, I'm all thrilled because... I've barely had to use my smaller chain ring on my compact to get up hillls... I must be in way better shape than I thought!

That was short lived, because then I remembered I'd swapped an 11-28 cassette onto my bike a month or so ago.

I always feel way strong in spring, even on studded tires, because I'm passing everyone on my way to work. That lasts just as long as it takes for the really fast riders to get out of their indoor spinning lessons where they have been building both base miles and speed all winter, and onto the road where they pass me like I'm standing still.

Winter riding is much less about badassery and much more about bundle-uppery. - malkin
