I rode my bike to work I drove 6 miles and parked then rode the rest, of course my computer picked today to NOT WORK, so I don't know how far I rode TOTAL TIME ????? 1 HOUR, that includes driving, took me about 45 minutes to ride, I had a few hills but not long ones thank goodness, I got here at 8:15, took my clothes off used my washcloth and dressed.

I packed a backpack so I had about 8 lbs. on my back, I had to pack clothes and food, deo.. Next time I will be prepared and have all that stuff here the day before.

I'M SOOOO EXCITED. I stopped at a red light and a man was taking out his trash and he said "that's a good way to save gas and health too! he said be careful and have a great day." That was so nice.

    Ok, now I gotta eat

HOME??????? we are riding this evening about 26 miles - then I get to go home I am estimating I rode between 8-10 miles, I will check this evening and see. I hit several red lights and was stuck waiting on a train.

Thanks ya'll, I am actually awake this morning and in good spirits I didn't even need the caffeine, or as much, as I usually do to wake me up - this might be the start of something good.

    Awesome!

So happy for you! Knew you could do it! Nice to get those friendly remarks to, of course it is a motivator as well. If more persons would ride to work, there would be more bike paths made on streets. More city officials would recognize the need. With gas prices purhaps we could become more like Holland where they even have bike parking areas everywhere.
Good job on getting yourself organized to get cleaned up without shower at work.
Too many people freeze up if they don't have a shower at work after the ride, but there are ways to get cleaned up, if you really want to do it, as you know. Either two wash clothes or baby wipes. Have your hairwashed the night before, put in curlers overnight if you have long hair. Shorthair, your set. Most work places have bathrooms last time I knew to change in stall.
The clothes packed up in pack is the only drag, plus the shoes, unless you have a particular pair that matches (office person type shoes) extra pair to keep at desk. If you work in a warehouse/factory, it is easier. Keep your hard shoes there at work.

Thanks! yep the bag was heavy but I know next time what I need to do, thank goodness I had a skirt that I could fold up and it wouldn't wrinkle, I brought my barely there shoes they are very light, I think I may leave them here this evening.

Cleaning up wasn't hard, I took a shower this morning, my hair was still wet I just pulled it back into a ponytail and took it down when I got here, it looked fine, I don't use a hair dryer until cold weather comes. I don't feel stinky or yucky, I used deo. before I left and when I got here, it was easier than I thought, and I was REALLY sweating, my last few miles were hilly. I had on my neon yellow vest, I won't wear that again it kept too much heat in I will just have to wear my yellow jersey, I like being visible .

    Visibility is key

    Right on!
I will be riding in next week if my ouchee heals ok. I usually ride in if I know my return ride home is not going to be too hot (in afternoon 1pm).

My MTB is black and silver, some red. Not as bright and cheery as my road bike.
My road bike is yellow with orange and has yellow tires too. I wear yellow often as well. Sounds yuk, but it is a very pretty bike.

Oh that I can feel your excitment.

I commute to work by the good ole LIRR (yea right). The station is just a couple of miles from my house but I always wanted to ride the couple of miles instead of taking the car. But there is no way, no how I would leave my bike locked at the train station. I just recently found out that there are bike lockers at many of the train stations. Rental is $60.00 a year. Of course they don't have any at my train station, but I plan on writing these people and see about getting some at my station.

    Safe Bike Commuting to you!!!!

    Jo -

There are folding bikes out there, you know, that you can take with you on the train. Ummmm, <smoke pouring out of ears> Brompton(?) is one of the brands. There are others...

Rumor has it that there are (were) folding bike races in London(?) I actually saw a bit of a video on it once. The guys rushed off a train, unfolded their bikes and biked to the finish line. The unfolding stage was a hoot.

It might be worth some research, esp. if The Powers That Be don't install bike lockers in you station. The way gas prices are, a folder would pay for itself in a hurry. And just think of the bikejournal miles.

Way to go Tri and welcome to the wonderful world of commuting. Now you know why I'm always so fiesty on the board - I'm usually posting right after a bike ride!! and yeah - ain't it cool when you get ppl cheering you on!! as for the backpack thing - I know what ya mean, I leave my jeans and shoes here and switch out about once a week so my pack isn't so heavy. I can't even imagine Not commuting anymore!!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming: "Yeah Baby! What a Ride!"
