Freezing out my throat and nose, HELP!

    To disable ads, please log-in.

This cooler air (50's and lower 60's) is freezing out my throat and sinuses. I have to stop every 15 minutes or so to let them warm back up. I also have a running faucet of a nose in the cooler weather and need to blow my nose several times during a ride. How do you all deal with this?

When it's cool out I wear a Buff over my chin, and pull it up over my nose and mouth from time to time, on descents and when I'm not breathing too hard. (Once it gets below freezing this doesn't work as well 'cause it gets saturated with moisture that freezes). Once it gets really cold I wear a Buff with a hole cut out of it for my nose and mouth, pulled up over my nose all the time. And blow snot rockets.

Oh, and cool-weather gloves really need to have those soft fuzzy areas on the tops, large ones. I have a pair that have some sharp seams there and I'm forever cutting my tender nostrils on them

    What LPH said.

Learn to blow "snot rockets". Yes, it's rather un-ladylike, but its much easier on the skin around your nose than constantly wiping it on the back of your gloves. Just watch out for riding buddies, pedestrians, cars, etc!

(I just had this conversation while hiking with some of my aunts yesterday One thought snot rockets were disgusting, while the other two thought it was perfectly acceptable. Not suprisingly, those two were the more athletic of the three of them.)

    +1.

I try to be a bit subtle about it - not do it directly in front of cars if I can avoid it, etc. But if someone in a car ever tells me they have a problem with it, I can always tell them it's less toxic and polluting than their emissions.

I'm still a snot-rocket-loser here on TE. Never done it. You can use the terry portion of the gloves if desperate. Gross, yes I know. Just don't ever swap gloves w/someone.

I own Buffs as already mentioned. Plus, a balaclava (too warm in those temps likely).

But, something just to take the chill outta the air you inhail would help.

Cars usually aren't in the "line of fire," but other riders often are. Unlike spitting, you'd have to be pretty darn coordinated to shield a snot rocket with your other hand. Just be super aware of who's behind you...

Saturday was discussing this thread with my hubby and 10y/e son. Son was amazed that until now, his Mom had never heard of a snot rocket - he was more than happy to demonstrate.

Fast forward to Sunday, post 1 1/2 hr ride in low-50's weather and I mention failing at snot rockets, getting them all over glove, jacket. Son goes, "You are trying blow them while riding the bike?......that is too cool"

Wonder if this will hit playground talk today.

I don't do snot-rockets either. I have been known to use my buff in times of desperation! What ?? No worse than using the back of a glove

I get real throat and chest burn in cold weather, so I chew gum. Don't know why it works, but it does. Maybe because I can't gasp air in while I chew? I don't know, but I don't go anywhere on my bike without gum in winter. Hope you find something that works, it's a horrid thing to suffer.
