who has to work on Thanksgiving

    To disable ads, please log-in.

Hi there, just wondering who all the lucky people are that get to work on Thanksgiving. This will be my first year having to do that. I am a little bummed as I would much rather spend it with my family. I just have to keep reminding myself how lucky I am to have a job. I may have to work Christmas as well. Hope everyone is well.

I do actually get Thanksgiving off. Unfortunately, I work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday after that. Since I'm a manager in retail, as soon as Thanksgiving hits, I am at 6 days a week until mid January. Nothing personal, but I do not like the Christmas shopping season. Many people are not nice - very cranky. I also get extremely tired of hearing Christmas music.

I have to work Thanksgiving too, and it's also my first time having to do so. One of the not-so-good parts of being in health care...

Solo- sorry to hear that you are having to work the holidays. I did that last year in the hospital. I had never done that before in my life. Fortunately, the day was not very busy but enough so that it was not a vacation.

I missed being with family or family of sorts like good friends. Bascially anyone not at work. At least we had the internet and I could keep up with what was going on TE. I would not have know what do with myself if there was no TE and the rest of you to keep me informed, laughing, and talking about your struggles of life. If I was not on the web, I was reading a book. Anything to keep from thinking what the rest of the world was doing and eating.

Since my mother died our family has not really taken to the hoildays like we did when she was around. We still do some things that are "traditional" but in other ways we have simplfied everything to make it easy. If at all possible our family is somewhere near a beach where there is diving, fishing and lots of sunshine! I think to some extent we all can not wait until January when it is all over. Not only that by then the days are getting longer That is always a plus.

I hope your day is less stressful than a normal workday and that you will be able to relax somewhat. Bring a book and check in here when you can.

    i work on thanksgiving.
    and christmas.
    and new years.
    . . . . .
i work at an airport. people gotta fly, right? i'm usually able to get christmas off due to my seniority, but not this year. the company provides a thanksgiving dinner and a christmas dinner - catered. it's not so bad. i remember working in a convenience store about a hundred years ago, people would come in on christmas and say "oh its too bad you have to work on christmas" and i would think "if you werent here i wouldnt have to be here."

I am working every day next week except Wednesday. I just don't like getting up real early in the morning for work say like four, five, and six am for example to deal with all the big holiday sale shoppers. On the plus a forty hour work week equals a bigger paycheck. I work in retail.

I'm sorry to all of you working the holidays.
I'm not working Thanksgiving this year, but have the last two. But, I'll be there Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Years all overnight. I'll hopefully have some time to spend catching up on TE then! I feel like I'm out of touch here!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, no matter where you spend it! Let's hope that people are in the holiday spirit when you have to deal with them (funny how they forget that part!).

Pinkbike, I work at an airport too

My seniority is good enough for me to hold fri-sun off but since the holidays are mid-week, there goes that. I could take Thanksgiving off but since it's my normally scheduled work day and pay is double time & a half, I will work.

So yes, I am working. Our company is catering food. DH will be off Thanksgiving and the day after so we'll have three days off together.

It's always depressing to work on Christmas and I'm not looking forward to that. My parents are out of state and before DH, the holidays were very lonely when I worked them. Now it's not AS bad, we just go to my parents as soon as we can on or after the holiday.

I am off but I worked at Lowe's all through college. I never could have off the day after Thanksgiving and only got to go to one A&M-texas game in my years there.

My husband's owner insists they be open the day after and Saturday even though they have no business. This year he is off though so it will be nice. We are probably going to the coast for a long weekend.

I hope those of you that have to work can make the most of it. I am not a big thanksgiving fan but I wouldn't enjoy working either. I do not like Christmas shopping, years in retail ruin it for you. I try to buy in one day or online.

One nice thing about working Thanksgiving and Christmas for me will be that it will be nice and quiet. I think most of the managers, except for me of course are off.

I am taking ALL the holidays off (and the day after, too!) I have been in health care all my life, and "single" (ok, no hubby and kids) and sometime family "distances away". So I worked more than my share. I am now a "department of one" so I pretty much take my vacation and holiday's as I please. (yep--I know I am lucky---but I have paid my dues). I used to work nights even, so stayed up all day before or after to do the holiday thing w/ family...that was tough!

Sorry to all you out there. And yep, I'll be out on Friday w/ my family for some low key (later in the day) shopping!

Happy Turkey Day no matter where you are!
