I think I broke my toe

    I just need to vent...

I think I broke my toe on Friday. I have a big granite rock doorstop in my bedroom to keep the cats from shutting the door and trapping themselves. So I walked into it barefoot. Owie. Now I have a hugely swollen toe decorated in shades of purple, magenta, and navy blue/black. Stupid toe. It could just be sprained...I haven't been to the doctor. But I have a feeling it's broken. And this particular toe has been broken at least twice before. Stupid toe.

Evidently I have a vendetta against this particular foot. I have chronic tendonitis in my ankle/heel, I recently skinned two of my toes on a rock outside, I have a recurring ingrown toenail on my big toe, and now I kick a rock and break my toe.

Here's the great part (I'm being sarcastic)...I am doing my first Century next Saturday. This stupid toe is not going to stop me. I've ridden twice since I injured it and it only hurts for about 10 minutes. Then it goes numb. I am in denial and I'm going to pretend that it's fine.

    Wah.

Wow, you're tough. I would sitting the recliner ordering everyone around if my toe was black and blue!

Rollie Pollie I'm commiserating with you. About 3 weeks ago I stumped my toe on a door stop and broke my 4th toe or some bone in my forefoot. I did ride my bike on 2 short rides and thought yea, I can still ride my bike. The 4th day I went for a walk which made my injury much worse and too bad to even ride bike. I'm still hobbling around and healing seems very slow. Just be very careful to not make your injury worse.

I hope your toe makes a speedy recovery.

Does buddy taping work on toes? (taping your toe to the next one - its done often with broken fingers).

Really for fingers and toes it seems like there's not much that can be done, unless you opt for surgery. I think I broke my thumb a year or so back and didn't realize it (I thought it was just a bad sprain, by the time I decided it may be worse it was surely too late). It healed on its own, though I now have a big bump near the joint.... BUT I do wonder if I'm not better off. Someone that I know broke her thumb in, I think, the same place and was casted for it. My naturally healed thumb works fine and feels fine (no pain or stiffness), if looks a bit funky, while hers no longer bends at all....

I'm happily buddy taping and my toe seems to like it. The only time the toe really hurts is if I accidentally bend it. So taping it securely to its helper-friend-next-door-neighbor toe seems to be doing the trick. I really hope the natural healing plan works. My toe is not bent in any strange angles, which is probably a good sign.

So cosc...I think I'll heed your advice and walk as little as possible this upcoming week! I hope your toe starts healing a little faster. I REALLY want to ride this Century coming up next Saturday so I've got my fingers crossed that it doesn't get any worse!!!
