I've been wanting to do that route for some time. From all I've read, the best direction is to go from Lands End to John-o-Groats because of the winds. Did you go north-south instead?

yes we decided that psychologically North South would be better
seemed like a good idea at the time but the head winds were pretty strong
    as you rightly say.
The trip was not a tour at all tho' we had no time whatsoever to sight see nor do anything but cycle, and see to our body needs ( eat, drink sleep and go to the loo!!)
Of course we did shower too .........
some of the campsites left a lot to be desired but at the end of a long day we did not care if the shower/ toilets werent as pristine as at home!!!
I would advise anyone to plan this very carefully and make sure you know the terrain, I was shocked at the hills in Devon and Cornwall, particularly over Bodmin and eventually at Lands End.
It has taken me two days to be able to even think about writing the diary I kept on the pc
anyway my legs are recovering nicely
