    a problem of base?

So today marks day #7 that I’ve trained in a row, I’ve never been able to go so long without a rest day. See you when I get there.

    I did
Fri – run 7K to work in the morning
Sat – swim 2K in the morning, bike 45K hilly in the afternoon
Sun –run 7K (felt bad, must have been the biking)
    Mon – swim 2K
Tue – run 7 K (felt better than ever)
Wed – swim 2K open water
    Thu – bike 40K hilly
Fri – run 7k to work (bit hard after the hard biking)

In the past months I would be sooo tired after 3-4 days of training. Mostly, long rides on weekends would wear me out.
I can do 120 k+ no prob but I need a lot of recovery after that. In particular, I couldn’t bring myself to go to Monday night swim practice with the club, where we do over 3K every time.
Not enough base? or is the looming race just motivation enough to make me go out & train?

    All of the above?

Your body goes through cycles of peaks and valleys. You can give adequate rest and do the same workout on different weeks and it might feel really good one week and really bad another. I think when it feels bad you need to listen to your body and back off a bit. Burnout is to be avoided!
I'd rather be swimming...biking...running...and eating cheesecake...

Hmm.. I think you ought to aim for at least one day off a week (and sometimes two will not kill you either). A lot of self trained people actually overtrain I think. Also working out hard (which is based on your perception) should only be a few days a week... a good number of your workouts should be well within your comfort zone.

I use my days off to keep home stuff going... though I am still overcommitted...

Interesting! I'm going on 10 days without a rest day too (14/15 days of training). I chalk it up to fitness level AND not working. I get adequate rest and some of my days as easy days because all I did was swim. (That's easy for me because I can't swim fast lol). I wish I could run more but still having shin issues and seeing PT regularly for acupuncture...)

    16 - bike 34k
    17 - swim 1k
    18 - bike 16k, run 3k brick
    19 - swim 1.5k, bike 30k easy
    20 - swim 1k, bike 55k
    21 - run 9k
    22 - bike 12k hill repeats
    23 - swim 1k

Oh, I am totally aware about proper rest days etc. - this is the first time I've gone such a stretch, and Monday is definitely going to be the rest day.

The funny thing is I have my period, preceded by one of the worser episodes of pms (little emotional breakdown at work, happens only every X months) - but I feel energized and can still train when sometimes it makes me tired.

I'm wondering to what extent one could build a base - considering the time budget we have, not being pros, so as to digest 100K plus rides.

Hi alpinerabbit, how many hours a week do you have to train? Llooking at what you have done this week I noticed you only got 2 rides in but 3 runs and swims.. is this normal? I would be trying to get more riding in if it is something you want to improve. At least 3 a week, a couple of 1hr ones and one 2hr one maybe? And you probably need some easy flat riding to develop your base with long, slow distance rides. And the other thing that came to mind was your nutrition, how is it? Maybe you are so stuffed after the rides due to inadequate refuelling? What do you think?
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

I do between 5 and 10 hours. Surpassing the 10 only with a long weekend ride. I have only been riding on weekends except for the last couple weeks and I know that's not good. But it's such a pain getting out of the city (20min out, 20 in) before reaching decent riding terrain... it's almost not worth getting dressed up on an evening...

For now it's almost over NEways. I'll try to do better next season. If I still work in the same place I can start from there, except DBF won't be with me.
